Montessori Education
The goal in our Montessori program is to help each child reach his or her full potential in all areas of his or her life. The classroom activities support the development of cognitive skills as well as social skills, emotional growth, and physical coordination. Montessori is synonymous with hands-on learning, which provides children the opportunity to learn by doing.
Dorothy and Donald Barry first introduced the Montessori concept to central Louisiana in 1978. They opened the Montessori Children's House with five students. The school has changed locations four times and has now grown to have over 130 students.
In the fall of 1996, the school moved to the present location, 4209 North Bolton Avenue. The building was specifically designed for Montessori environments. The campus is located on 2.7 acres of land, and includes two outdoor classrooms, a natural garden and pond area, along with a large playground area.
The Montessori Educational Center is approved by the Louisiana Department of Education and the Louisiana Montessori Association. The school is also affiliated with the American Montessori Society, the Louisiana Montessori Association and the Montessori World Educational Institute.
Dr. Maria Montessori developed the 'Montessori Method of Education' in the early 1900's. She was one of the first few females who graduated from medical school at the University of Rome during this time and based her educational theories on her scientific observations of young children's behavior. While the Montessori Method was introduced in the United States as early as 1912, interest decreased until the mid-1950's. Today there are thousands of Montessori schools throughout the world.
